Used to refer to specific or known entities (English: the).

o / a (singular)

os / as (plural)

Examples:

Indefinite Articles (Artigos Indefinidos)

Used to refer to non-specific or unknown entities (English: a, an, some).

um / uma (singular)

uns / umas (plural)

Examples:

• Um carro (A car)

• Uma casa (A house)

• Uns livros (Some books)

• Umas flores (Some flowers)

Notes on Usage:

1. In Portuguese, articles agree in gender and number with the noun they modify.

2. Definite articles are used much more frequently in Portuguese than in English, especially before names, days of the week, and possessive adjectives:
